Academy News Dec 12

Hello all,

Merci à tous ceux qui ont pris le temps de venir à la station et suivre leur entrainement/ évaluation.  It was great to see everyone on the hill tacking advantage of good conditions and showing their willingness to commit and learn. Very happy about that.

Supervisors have made selections for their programs, and will be filling the balance of their teams this Sat. and Sun., Please be here to meet your supervisors and learn what program you will be working with. Ski Wee , Performance and All Mtn will still be drafting people this weekend.

Only people that have attended the assessment/training and pre course  days should be here on the weekend.  If you have not been here yet, please stay home. Once we have dealt with the “committed” we can think of scheduling a make up for extra help if needed.

Be here before 9 am

We  have a busy weekend ahead of us, meeting program supervisors, getting a coat and pass. Be ready with instructor registration form , printed receipt of your dues payment  and banking info sheet if your new, All of this can be found on our web page.

Supervisors have chosen the # of people they will require to teach the # of customers they have in the programs, so those that have not been drafted will need to change expectations, we will take the time to reorient people best we can.

At 9 am, each program will have a welcome table, find were you are assigned. If not assigned we can discuss where you may fit in.

Academy News Nov 29th

This is the information I prepared to go to our membership this week or early next week. and i thought i would send it to everyone on our list. Since you all have an interest in the on going development of the Camp Fortune area, both winter and summer.

valued members and guests,

We need your support!

The National Capital Commission (NCC) is currently in the public consultation process of the Gatineau Park Master Plan and is gathering opinions on three important topics, including the development of Camp Fortune.  As valued members and guests we want to make sure your opinions are heard.

Camp Fortune operates on a long term lease with the NCC and is located on of a section of Gatineau Park lands designated for high use recreational activities. All development, changes and additions to the ski resort facilities, activities and business at Camp Fortune must be approved by the NCC.

Camp Fortune management is proposing some future development such as the installation of an alpine luge and peak to peak ziplines in the valley, among other long term projects. This would allow us to become less financially dependent on the winter and would help support winter (ski) capital projects. As you know we have seen variable weather the las few winters with +27c days in December in 2015 and over 60mm of rain falling in February 2018, just to name two memorable examples. Weather events have an impact on profitability and make proper planning for capital projects increasingly difficult. What we do know is that summer visitations are much more stable and adding to summer operations will allow us to be more resilient in the event of a bad ski season. More consistent income would also allow us to invest into further infrastructure for skiing.  In addition, the proposed activities are complimentary to our existing activities which currently includes the aerial park and mountain biking. We want to expand our active adventure attractions and appeal to a broader range of customers. The development of our summer activities will also allow us to provide more year round jobs for staff and to contribute to the local economy.

Please note we have also proposed winter development, which the NCC chose not to include in this survey. Please do not interpret this omission as a lack of our support and intention to further invest in downhill skiing. As one of the oldest ski areas in Canada with a rich history dating back to the 1920s we will always support downhill skiing and snowboarding. It is our passion.

We do ask that all of our members as well as everyone in your networks take 5 minutes to fill out the survey and voice your opinions and support of Camp Fortune and share any thoughts you may have. We thank you all for your continued support.

Some additional background info:

The Gatineau Park Master Plan is the long-term plan for the development, use and management of Gatineau Park, the Capital’s conservation park. The plan envisions Gatineau Park as a model for protecting natural and cultural heritage.

A brief history of Camp Fortune: The Ottawa Ski Club operated Camp Fortune from the 1920s into the 1980s when the NCC took over the lands. Camp Fortune continued operating as a ski resort through various agreements with private operators. In 1994 Peter and Robert Sudermann signed a long term lease and continue to operate.

Sincerely,

Erin Boucher
