Academy News

Hello all,
Dec 5 and we have two runs and two chairs operating. The pre course and instructor training is underway on a great sunny day. Colder weather will get here eventually but for now we take what we have and be happy.
Next weekend we add TA training to the mix and a PDP on the Sunday, the PDP will be covering assessment & development, and is a great opportunity to get some training either in the AM or the PM. you must register on line, so go to http://www.snowpro.com , select courses then schedule and registration then pdp at Camp Fortune. get it done soon, as they will close it by Tuesday and there will be no last minute availability. Course Conductors have to be found and sent to us, so they need lead time to get #s .

Also this will be the last time I use ChimpMail system, so please be sure you are following our Academy blog.

The online registration for new and returning instructors will be closed on Monday the 7th, 2015 . From Monday on you will need to register in the pro room in person.

Academy News – Dec 2, 15

Hello all,
This weekend we will be running sessions for all, pre-course for un-cert’s, returning instructors, and the pilot project TA’s, please be at the hill by 9 am.
I have decided that we will use the Dec training phase to hold a food drive. To that end I ask that all who use the pro room drop off food donations each day you come out to slide.

Our Top Ten priority items are:

– Peanut Butter
– Cereal and oatmeal
– Canned pasta
– Canned beans
– Salted cookies and crackers
– Canned fruits and vegetables
– Canned soups
– Dry pasta

We will deliver this food to one or more of the local food banks, I think that with this small gesture we as a group can make a real difference. Thank you in advance for taking the time to grab an item before coming up to the hill.

At Tremblant this week for training and the CSIA convention, see you all on sat morning.

Academy News Nov 24, 2015

Hello all,

We will be open this Thursday 12 to 4 pm, Friday closed because of probable rain and open 9 to 4 both Sat and Sun.
This means we go ahead with the hiring clinic on Saturday.
Nov. 28:

  • Hiring Clinic for new instructors, 9:00 am in the pro-room (Alexander Lodge):
  • Indoor and on-snow sessions;
  • Skills evaluation and recommendation for certification courses;
  • Clarify expectations, questions and answers.

There is no charge for this initial day, however the Academy offers a 16-hour pre-course for skiers and snowboarders preparing to take the level one course. Cost for the pre-course is $100.00 (price includes your lift pass for training and on course).

Special note to all certified CSIA instructors, Camp Fortune will host a PDP on the 13th of Dec. two sessions AM/PM. You need to sign up for this on the CSIA site. We are not taking names at the cage. Be sure you get it done early as there are only 100 spots.
Returning instructors, please remember you need to be completely registered (dues paid) before you get a coat or a lift pass.

Once you’ve got your coat, you may wish to go to the Camp Fortune Boutique to find accessories for your winter outfit i.e. Black pants, new goggles, gloves and stuff for your Xmas list. Remember you get 20% off.
Looking forward to meeting our new people and seeing the familiar faces that may come out for a few runs to get the season going.

Pro Room Hours – Nov 21,15

This coming Saturday the Pro Room will be open for returning instructors to complete registration and pick up their jackets.
Its important to have proof that you are in good standing with the CSIA or CSCF or CASI (that means your dues are paid). I would not want you to drive up for nothing. Also be sure you have registered on our website as a returning instructor.
The pro room will be open between 10 and 1:30.

We now have an opening for a Supervisor position in the Ski Wee program.
I will accept expressions of interest over the next couple of weeks. My goal is to select someone by mid Dec. If you feel you are up to the challenge please communicate your interest to me via email fbernier@campfortune.com
Job description
A person accepting the role of supervisor does so with an understanding of the following realities:
We need you to be a; leader, trainer, overseer, bookkeeper, collaborator, problem solver and committed to our success as a school.
Below are some of the traits needed

  • A take charge attitude.
  • Leadership skills, motivation skills, communication skills.
  • A solid understanding of pedagogy pertaining to riding and/or skiing.
  • Time management skills (balancing Paperwork and on snow time)
  • Full commitment to the school and a commitment to delivering the best service possible.
  • Problem solving.

Specific tasks

  • Supervisors select and assign instructors to groups.
  • Prepare class cards for the groups in their program.
  • Track hours taught for the instructors in the program. Prepare payroll report each weekend.
  • Organize and/or participate in on snow training.
  • Ensure that instructors are organized and give support where needed.
  • Supervision is the pathway to developing a great team, to that end it’s important to take any and every opportunity to shadow and evaluate instructors.
  • Have outdoor on snow presence while lessons are being taught.

Qualifications

  • Strong understanding of teaching skiing and or riding, level 3 + is an asset.
  • Proven experience in school operations.
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Competence in French and English is an asset.
  • Team attitude.

Academy News

I would like to announce that Yolanda Gaiarsa will be stepping down from her role as Ski Wee supervisor. Yolanda has not come to this decision easily; she would like to focus on family life and tells me we will see her at the hill from time to time.
I would like to thank Yo for the twenty + years she has put into the school. As a member of the supervisor team she was instrumental in quite a few evolutions over the time, not the least of which was he collaboration in creating our instructors handbook.
I and our overall group will be losing a valuable player but this is the natural progression of things and I completely understand that the commitment required to supervise at some point becomes hard to balance against three kids growing and involved in other activities.
So Thank you Yolanda for all the time you gave us and look forward to sliding with you when you drop by to take a few runs with Andrew and the kids.

Academy News – Oct 31, 15

Hello all,

The season is approaching and I am looking forward to seeing the white stuff. This coming Sunday is our open house, between 10 and 4pm. Maybe some of you will show up, if you do we will have a desk setup to answer questions and help you get your registration done.
The General meeting is on the 7th of Nov and with any luck at all we will have our new uniforms ready to distribute. Of course only to those that are completely active will be able to pick up jackets.
Important for all returning and certified instructors
Please be sure that you are up to date with the CSIA, CASI or the CSCF. (Dues paid). Be aware that only fully active people will be receiving lift passes when we open.
New un-certified instructors will get your coats once you’re certified and lift passes are included if you take the pre-course training.

Action items for all;
1 Complete registration on line. (See my signature)
2  If you’re certified, get your dues paid.
3  Be ready to sign your offer of service.

Please take the time to complete registration and be prepared to do rest on the 7th. Because, if the uniforms are in, you will want to be ready. It’s also, as I have said before, important to get this done in one step in order to avoid tracking all sorts of missing parts that eventually cause payroll and other issues.
