Academy News – Feb 2, 18

Hey all

We are now at week 4 of the programs, in no particular order, the following needs to be done if not done already:

  • Be sure you have the correct spelling for names of the pupils in your class, both first and last name. Produce a clean class card.
  • Use the progress card to assess your pupils in preparation for final evaluations. See your supervisors for details.
  • Plan for having your final evaluations completed by week 6, in order to distribute by week 8 and 9.

We will have another social on week 6, Pizza, Beer, Soft drinks, to benefit the Norm Grondin Foundation.

Sat and Sun sessions be on snow at 8 am – this is for all.  Although not compulsory , keep in mind we do this for you and your development. There are also sessions on Monday evenings for ski and snowboard.

Speaking of development, please learn from the challenges you may encounter out there with your groups, and remember you are the main reason that they have fun and wish to improve. Take charge and have fun out there.!!!

The end of season banquet , “Academy Awards” will be on the 7th of April. Put that in your calendar, and keep an eye open for Fern (or the “What was I thinking?” award) candidates and you can also think of instructors you would nominate for the various awards.

Feb 21 to 23rd , there is a CSIA ‘Advanced teaching Module’ being offered at Camp Fortune in the evening. Go to www.snowpro.com to register. Must be a level two as a pre-requisite.

And for those looking for end of season deals … this just in from Jim Kennedy

Selling Head SuperShape Rally demo skis –  170cm w/binding @$600 tax in … click on the link above to contact Jim.

All for now,

Frank

Monday Sessions

Each Monday evening, instructor improvement sessions are held at Fortune for all Fortune instructors who wish to attend, 6:30 in pro room and 7 pm on snow. It is good to see people out skiing / riding , it’s important to take time to develop your skills.

This Monday, JP will be on hand for our riders , it would be nice to see all our snowboarders take advantage of training, if able to make it up to the hill.

Frank

See you there.

Academy News – Jan 25, 18

Hey all,

Let me start by thanking all those that have been working the last few weekends, all programs have started and the classes should be fairly set. We have done a great job of dealing with the various adjustments that are always needed. Keep up the good work – it’s important to be sure you communicate with your supervisors should you have an issue.

Reminder to: Greet customers, Engage the group, Count your students and be sure they are all there with you. Always take time to debrief and give feed back to the group at the end of class.

Basically, be in charge. Chair safety is a constant and that being said, please use the Pineault Triple when feasible, don’t stand in the quad line up while the triple has nobody. The ski wee groups should be using triple since you are only able to bring two kids up at a time.

Progress cards, every instructor will pick up a progress card for each class they teach and keep track of your groups progress, this will serve as a guide for the final card each pupil will receive on week 7 of the program. It also serves as a guide for their skill development.

There will be an “All staff party “ on Sunday  5 pm to 10 pm (or your bed time, whichever comes first), this is for staff only.  Please RSVP if you’re planning on attending. Call ext. 2223 or email  academy@campfortune.com  .

We will also be doing Lift Evacuation Training  on Sunday right after the hill closes (4:15pm) on the Clifford chair. All are welcome to come out and learn the process. We will probably never need to do it, but an annual refresher exercise is a good idea.  We will load 4 chairs and get people off of the chairs using the rope evacuation system. You can be in chair or be helping lower people. This will wrap up before 5:30PM.

Academy News Jan 15

Hello all,

To begin, I want to thank all that were here for our first weekend of group lessons. It’s a big deal to get all those people organized and everyone involved plays an important part in creating some good experiences for our guests.  THANK YOU !!!!

Quote from a Parent;  Enjoyed the first day of lessons today.  Great job on the grooming and lots of runs open!  Nice to see the dedicated and enthusiastic instructors out with the kids.

Another Parent came to me to praise a couple of our Ski Wee instructors. For being very professional in dealing with a very demanding / bossy mom.

Over 2000 people started lessons over the weekend, things went quite well and with a few adjustment will be better next weekend.

There are few things to address so in no particular order, I will attempt to answer some questions .

  • For various reasons some instructors did not get a full slate of groups.
  • They may have missed the 6 and 7th of Jan weekend.
  • They may not have been certified until  later.
  • Or they simply chose not to be here until the last minute.
  • For those that have no groups or only one group, always drop by Privates to see if you can pick up a walk in.
  • Every instructor should be here for the full day of their committed day regardless of having a class or not.
  • Because if you’re not available you will not get the chance to get a group that may become available.

But the main thing that all of our people should understand is as an instructor/ coach you choose to make yourself available on certain days and we the school will assign groups/ lessons/ privates to you based on experience and availability. It will take some time for you to learn the ropes and get comfortable with the system.

  • The Gold coats were handed out to some of our new instructors  we just did not have enough green coats. You can be sure that I am wanting to switch you to green as soon as possible.

‘Twas the Night b4 Christmas…

And in the Pro room, Frank was all agog…
Where are all my instructors, so many haven’t given us the Nod.
If only Blitzen and Prancer could ride a ski or a board,
Then I’d be sure, of having my training squad.

Dasher and Prancer were needed to lend a hoof,
To help poor Frank off of the roof…
‘nough said… if I want to get paid!

Ok now back to business, we will reopen on the 26th and we look forward to a busy holiday season. For those that signed up for the Xmas Camp please be in the pro room by 8:45 on the 26th. Meeting at 9 am.

A reminder to all that if you drop in during the holidays we expect all to be available to teach privates. So always wear your jackets and be ready.

We will be using the weekend of the 6th and 7th of Jan  for training.  I do expect all to be on hand i.e. if you’re a sat or a sun instructor show up on the day you have committed to.

Supervisors will be drafting their staff and making plans for the 9 week programs.

Be here and don’t be left behind.

Merry Christmas to everyone, hope you all enjoy the holidays.

All for now,

Frank
