Norm Grondin Foundation Fundraiser

We have a pair of Elan Amphibio (166cm, turning radius 14.5, binding included, 2017 model year) skis worth  $660 (pro price,  retail is even more) that have donated by Marty Holski to the cause.

This ski package is being sold to raise funds for the Norm Grondin Foundation,  i.e. the TA awards.

Please forward your  one time, silent bid to Academy@campfortune.com  before Saturday, January  28th   at 3 pm. To be paid by Sunday 29th 3 pm. We will only accept one bid per person, and that will be the first one received.

Academy News – Jan 15 ,2017

Hello all ,

Week 2 is in the books and all is going well. Thanks everyone for being part of the team and helping to serve our guests.

Just have a few reminders to pass along:

  • We are looking for extra people that could be available during the week for the schools program. If you are interested please contact the cage (academy@campfortune.com).
  • I want to remind all to keep counting your students to be sure you’re not forgetting anyone. Nothing to report just getting ahead of it…
  • And our chairlift protocol is: when you are helping kids up a lift, please take only two at a time. When riding with kids, please do not sit on the end seats – take one of the center seats in order to have a better chance of helping if needed.
  • Monday evening training begins tomorrow for skiers, please be in pro room by 630PM ,session is from 7 to 9.
  • Snowboarders ; please let me know if you have an interest in Monday sessions, and if we get enough we will try and get it organized.

Academy News -Jan 12, 17

Hey all,
After a great start to our 9 week programs, here we go with week 2. We have accepted a few more people in each program and I know we will have a few new instructors beginning this weekend.

Those that have groups should give some thought to a lesson plan with a few variations for the weekend, always good to have a few ideas as to what you would like to teach them.

I also want to remind all that Pinault is a park, so if you go down the hill-please be aware of the jumps and their landings, use caution and be sure you’re not placing your students in a bad spot.

Weekend morning sessions will begin this Jan 14, 7:30 am in the Pro Room, on snow for 8:00 AM, for both instructors and TAs.  Monday evening sessions will also begin Jan 16 – be in the pro room by 630 to be on-snow for 7 PM.

Teaching Tasks for the weekend:

  • Keep up the stance & balance drills
  • Mileage is important
  • Choose appropriate terrain to get results
  • Pivoting  is turning  your feet without turning the body
  • You will encourage movement to help this happen

Suggested Exercises (select according to class ability):

  • Ski with a very narrow stance, then wide stance
  • Ski without poles: Hands up high, then behind back, then crossed in front
  • Stepping – 100 step turns, slow then fast  – Stepping Turns
  • Brush out uphill foot while traversing, then reverse direction and brush out the other foot
  • Hockey stops in the fall line – Hockey Stops.
  • stem turns
  • on-snow 360s – On-snow 360s

 

 

 

Academy News – Jan 5, 2017

Hi All:

The sun is shining, the snow is down and groomed, lifts are running, it’s program time again…  now all I need is a melody…

Yup, it’s that time of year when the (local) world flocks to Camp Fortune to learn how to ski/board. And you know what that means – all instructors boots on boards, ready to teach.

For Saturday and Sunday, please be in the Pro for 8AM to pick up your ticket and meet with your supervisor – don’t worry if you don’t know who your supervisor is, you will meet him/her that morning.

After skiing ( on both days) we will be hosting a little fund-raising soiree in the Pro room at 4 PM. There will be pizza, beer and soft drinks available for a nominal fee (Pizza $2, Pop $1, Beer $5). The proceeds of this event go to the Norm Grondin Foundation – a foundation that helps ski/board Teaching Assistants to move up to the next level and take the CSIA or CASI Level 1 Course (for more information click here).

We are looking for people to work during the full-time period (Monday to Friday, 9 to 4) 2- 3 days a week. Interested people should contact the Cage at academy@campfortune.com or talk to Eric Trottier.

Academy News – Jan 1, 2017

Happy new year all,

Hope everyone has a safe and fun evening, I also hope some of you will be nice enough to join me at the hill on the 1st. As we will have some people looking for privates.

Next week we should have privates every day as the kids are not back in school yet. Hoping many of you will be around to teach/ski/ride.

The Big Show starts on the 7th and 8th. I expect everyone to be at the hill for 8am as it will take a bit of time for our supervisors to sort out their people.

A few simple rules of thumb; as the 9 week program begins

  • When you commit to a day , it means all day. i.e. until 4 pm.
  • If you are not teaching a group, you are to report to privates every hour on the half hour.
  • Be sure to have your coat on when you are at the hill.
  • It is understood that whenever you are at the hill, you are available teach, whether it’s your scheduled day or not.
  • Should you find that you are unable to help us, no problem just return your coat.
  • The only reason we asked if you wanted 2 or 3 starts is because we want those that really want 3 to get 3. If you asked for 2 start refer to the 1st  rule.
  • Be on time. Be happy to be here.

All said we have a good # of people on our lists, and I look forward to a great season of teaching skills development.

We are a big group, and the strength of our team is each individuals’ commitment to our collective success.

Xmas Camp Progress Report

Hello all,

We have had a few busy days, but in the interest of being clear, if you are coming to the hill, you must have your uniform and be prepared to teach. Because, as you all know , if you are here, you are available to teach. We can use help teaching this week and would be happy to have more people  join the fun and hey – make $!

If your joining us,please arrive in the morning.

PS – we could use some extra boarders…

Merry Christmas and holiday wishes to all,

As we go into the holidays we can expect the hill to be busy, since we have great conditions and lots of trails open.

For all our new people it’s important to finish your registration and get your jackets, in order to be ready for the programs.

If you’re a returning instructor, and as of yet have not been at the hill, be sure your dues are paid and you can show us a card or a receipt from the CSIA CSCF or CASI. As we will not be giving you a ticket unless your active.

Every day during the holidays, private lessons every hour on the Half hour.

Want to remind everyone to read the instructor handbook on our web page, https://cfskiacademy.wordpress.com/ and be sure to follow our blog.

As a rule if you commit to a day, it means you are here all day. And it is also understood that if you are at the hill on any day, you are available to teach. When in doubt, ask me or any supervisor where you could be useful.

Special request: Sean Delaney “Mentoring  Supervisor” is looking for a few experienced instructors willing to give of their time helping some of our new people figure out the ropes and answering simple questions as to the day to day operations at the school. Academy News – Dec 21, 16

Hey all:

Good news we are open for daily operations, Clifford will be open on Wednesday and by Friday Marshall will be open also. For Saturday morning we will also have Skyline ; Bud Clark and Sparks.

Congratulations to all our new Level ones and level twos, please be sure you complete you registration process at the Cage in the pro room and for the level two be sure you update your status with Howard.

I want to let you all know that Paul Johannsen is the official Camp Fortune photographer for this winter. If you see Paul’s camera pointed at you, you are likely to become Fortune famous on the website, or on our social media platforms. If you don’t want to be Fortune famous then just let Paul know. Also, if you ever have any photos or stories to share with us to pass onto our Fortune Family via our platforms please do pass them along.  Please note we shouldn’t share photos of identifiable children (such as a close up) without parental permission. Group shots with helmets and goggles are fine. Thanks all and have a great season.
